The Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-2 on Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep. The Cubs improved to 9-1 against the Reds this season, including 6-1 at Great American Ball Park.

The Cubs did most of their early damage via the home run, with five of their nine runs scoring on homers.

Anthony Rizzo started the scoring with an unconventional three-run homer in the first inning. Rizzo’s ball hit Billy Hamilton as he converged with Adam Duvall, and the ball caromed away for an inside-the-park home run.

It was Rizzo's first career inside-the-park home run and the first inside-the-park homer for the Cubs since Aug. 5, 2011, when Tony Campana hit one, also against the Reds.

Addison Russell also homered for the Cubs, a fourth-inning shot off Reds left-handed starter Cody Reed. This was also a bit unexpected, as Russell entered Wednesday’s game hitting .121 against left-handed pitchers this season, the worst average for a qualified right-handed hitter vs. lefties.

The Cubs’ third homer came off the bat of Albert Almora Jr., his first career major league home run. It came in his 50th MLB at-bat, slightly ahead of the pace he set in five minor league seasons (one every 65.9 at-bats).
