Which ace -- Madison Bumgarner or Noah Syndergaard -- has the edge in Wednesday night's matchup? Getty Images

The marquee pitching matchup on Sunday pits New York Mets starter Noah Syndergaard against San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner. Syndergaard has emerged as one of the game’s top pitchers in 2016. Bumgarner has had an up and down start, but has been great against the Mets.

Here’s a closer look at some stats to know for this contest.

Syndergaard stats to know

Syndergaard made one previous start against the Giants (June 9, 2015) and was the losing pitcher when Chris Heston pitched a no-hitter.

Syndergaard’s 10 hits allowed matched a career-high. His two strikeouts that day were the fewest in any start in his career.

Syndergaard typically gets a lot of swings-and-misses at offspeed pitches out of the strike zone, but that day he got only four, tied for third-fewest in any start in his career. The Giants also caught Syndergaard on a day when he couldn’t take advantage after he got ahead in the count. The Giants had six hits in 16 at-bats when Syndergaard started a hitter 0-1. The six hits are the most allowed by Syndergaard in any start in his career.

But the Syndergaard the Giants will see is a much different pitcher than the one they saw 11 months ago.

The turning point for Syndergaard may have been when the Mets skipped his turn in the rotation after he allowed four runs in back-to-back starts against the Phillies and Red Sox at the end of August. He returned with seven innings of two-hit ball against the Braves on Sept. 12 and has been one of the best pitchers in baseball since then.

He’s 3-1 with a 2.32 ERA and 0.81 WHIP, 75 strikeouts and 6 walks in 54⅓ innings pitched in his past eight regular-season starts.

Bumgarner stats to know

Bumgarner has dominated the Mets. He has a 1.24 ERA in four starts vs New York, his best versus any team. His WHIP (0.79), opponents’ batting average (.150) and opponents’ OPS (.393) are his second-best against any team. He pitched a two-hit shutout in his last start against them in 2014.

The key to his success has been his curveball. The Mets don’t have a hit on any of the 62 curves he has thrown to them. They’re 0-for-18 with 13 strikeouts against the pitch.

Bumgarner has also chipped in a little with his bat, going 2-for-10 against the Mets, including a hit, a walk and two runs scored in his last game against them. Bumgarner is the rare pitcher who won’t be scared by Syndergaard’s heat. He hit a home run against a 98-mph pitch from Matt Stites of the Diamondbacks in July 2014.

Bumgarner is the only pitcher to homer against a pitch of 97 mph or faster in the eight seasons for which we have pitch data.
