Last week, Madison Bumgarner faced Clayton Kershaw for the ninth time overall and the seventh time since 2013. This week, in his very next start, Bumgarner faces another Cy Young winner: former Dodger and current Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke. Greinke is another of Bumgarner’s home run victims, too.

Having faced Kershaw in each of his previous two starts, Bumgarner will become the first pitcher to face any combination of Kershaw and Greinke in three consecutive starts, the Elias Sports Bureau notes. The last pitcher to face a Cy Young winner in at least three straight starts was Jimmy Nelson of the Milwaukee Brewers, who faced Tim Lincecum, Kershaw, Greinke and R.A. Dickey in August 2014.

Bumgarner has two career starts against Greinke: Sept. 23, 2014, and Sept. 1, 2015. Wednesday’s start will be the ninth time since September 2014 that the San Francisco ace has matched up with either Kershaw or Greinke. Elias Sports Bureau research shows that no other pitcher has faced any other set of pitchers nine times in that span.

Greinke has gotten the better of Bumgarner in both of their prior matchups, winning both games.

The Elias Sports Bureau notes that Bumgarner is 6-7 with a 2.10 ERA in 16 starts against former Cy Young winners. The Giants are 7-9 in those games.

Elias also notes that Bumgarner is the only pitcher in history with at least three home runs off Cy Young winners, including his homer off Greinke in 2014.

Since Greinke joined the Dodgers in 2013, he has the best ERA against the National League West (2.18), with Bumgarner third (2.72) behind Kershaw (2.29).

In addition to excelling at pitching, both Bumgarner and Greinke make other contributions. Bumgarner has won the Silver Slugger each of the last two seasons, and Greinke has won the Gold Glove in each of those last two -- and won the Silver Slugger in 2013, before Bumgarner did.
