Greinke sidelined as Dodgers face Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks

The Los Angeles Dodgers welcome the Arizona Diamondbacks to Dodger Stadium on Wednesday night, and the Dodgers were originally slated to start National League Cy Young candidate Zack Greinke, but he’s been scratched due to calf soreness. Carlos Frias will take the start in his place tonight on ESPN/WatchESPN (10 ET).

Dodgers win with Greinke

Even though the Dodgers lead the Giants by 6 games with 12 to play, they probably would have felt better about their chances to win if Greinke was making the start tonight. Since he joined the Dodgers in 2013, they have a .700 win percentage when he starts. That's tied with Adam Wainwright for best team win percentage in a pitcher’s starts over the past three seasons (minimum 70 starts).

The Dodgers also have struggled whenever someone besides Greinke or Kershaw has taken the mound this year. They’re 39-21 (.650) when either Greinke or Kershaw starts this season and 46-44 (.511) when anyone else starts.

Goldschmidt consistently great

Paul Goldschmidt has quietly been one of the best players in baseball over the past three years, posting 19.9 wins above replacement, which is good for third in MLB in that time. He trails only reigning American League MVP Mike Trout and 2015 AL MVP candidate Josh Donaldson in that time.

What makes Goldschmidt such a good hitter? His ability to use the whole field is one of his main strengths. No more than 22 percent of his hits and no fewer than 17 percent are to one direction of the outfield. He uses the whole outfield with power too, hitting nine home runs to the opposite field this season. That’s tied with Donaldson and José Abreu for fourth most in the majors.

Goldschmidt is also a phenomenal two-strike hitter, picking up 73 hits when down to his last strike, second most in the majors. Goldschmidt is also slugging .416 in two-strike counts, second in the National League to only Bryce Harper.
