Rams' Chris Long moves closer to return

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- The St. Louis Rams got back to work Wednesday, but as has become custom in recent weeks, they used the week's first practice to get some of their key players some rest.

Among those sitting out Wednesday's practice were defensive end Robert Quinn, center Scott Wells and end Eugene Sims. All three absences were not injury-related. Quinn and Wells watched the workout in what amounts to a veteran's day off.

Linebacker James Laurinaitis (foot) also did not practice Wednesday in what has become something of a Wednesday tradition for him.

Elsewhere, defensive end Chris Long continues to make progress toward a return. He wanted it known that he was practicing Wednesday so much that he yelled in the direction of one reporter to "print that [stuff]." According to Rams coach Jeff Fisher, the Rams have through Monday to activate Long from the injured reserve/designated to return list.

For his part, Long said he wanted to play last week and is hopeful that he'll be able to play against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. The Rams don't have to rush into a decision just yet and Long pointed out that Fisher will be the one to make the final call, as he did last week.

Here's the full injury report from Wednesday:

  • Did not participate: LB Will Herring (foot), CB Marcus Roberson (ankle), WR Kenny Britt (back), CB E.J. Gaines (knee), LB James Laurinaitis (ankle), DE Robert Quinn (not injury related), C Scott Wells (not injury related), DE Eugene Sims (not injury related).

  • Limited participation: TE Cory Harkey (thigh), TE Jared Cook (back), DT Alex Carrington (thigh).

  • Full participation: CB Lamarcus Joyner (groin).
