Freshman Trenton Thompson expected to play early at Georgia

It's rare to see an interior defensive lineman start, let alone make an impact, as a true freshman in the SEC. It's even rarer to see it happen at Georgia. Not even past stars Richard Seymour or Marcus Stroud -- both 6-foot-6, 300 pounds -- started their first year on campus.

But Trenton Thompson might be the exception. The 6-4, 311-pound defensive tackle, ranked No. 3 overall in the ESPN 300, has the size and ability to contribute early and maybe even start.

Thompson is currently listed behind veterans Chris Mayes and John Atkins at nose tackle, but coach Mark Richt has said his freshman star could also be given a shot to play 3- or 5-technique tackle as well.

"It doesn't matter to me [where I play], as long as I earn a spot eventually," Thompson said. "I like to play on the strong side, but it really doesn't matter to me. I just want to get on the field my first year."
