Gus Malzahn has high expectations for ex-Wolverine Blake Countess

Defensive back Blake Countess is filling an obvious position of need for Auburn.

The Tigers' secondary was a sore spot last season, surrendering the third-most yards through the air and the third-most yards per completion in the SEC.

But Countess isn't coming all the way from Michigan just to work his way up the depth chart and into the starting rotation.

While Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn acknowledges that "we have small numbers" in the secondary and Countess is someone "we're expecting to play," expectations are actually much higher than that.

"We think he has a chance to be a phenomenal player," Malzahn told reporters Wednesday at the SEC's spring meetings in Destin, Florida.
