Mark Richt has high expectations for freshman Roquan Smith

We all remember Roquan Smith, the ESPN 300 linebacker who chose UCLA on signing day but never actually signed with the Bruins. Smith had a change of heart and ended up signing a financial aid agreement with Georgia a few weeks later.

Though Smith never signed a letter of intent, the financial aid agreement allowed Georgia coach Mark Richt to talk about him before he arrived on campus.

On Wednesday, Richt raved about Smith’s athleticism and his ability to play all three downs.

"A lot of people think you have to have good corners to play man-to-man coverage, which is true,” Richt said. “But if you’re playing man everywhere, your linebacker has to match up with running backs, too, and we think Roquan is really well-suited for that. We think he’s unique in that way. We definitely need him.”

Smith, ranked No. 29 overall in the ESPN 300, is expected to be in Athens by June 1 along with the rest of the 2015 recruiting class.
