Potential 2015 sleeper: Vanderbilt

Today, we're starting a series to check out 14 sleepers that could emerge in the SEC in 2015. These are guys you might have heard of, but you really aren't too sure what to think about them. They haven't dazzled in the past or been a part of any lists.

These are the players who have shown some minute flashes here and there during their career and have a chance to wow us this fall. Every year, someone always pops up to surprise us. Maybe one of these 14 guys will do just that.

Vanderbilt

Sleeper: Jay Woods, DT, RSo.

Why: Woods played in 12 games last year, starting five at defensive end and finishing the season with 31 tackles, including 1.5 for loss. People likely weren't very familiar with him around the league, but coach Derek Mason was very impressed with what he saw from his youngster in the Commodores' 3-4 defense last year. Now, Wood has packed on some pounds and has moved to defensive tackle, where he really flourished during spring practice. Special was even thrown around when describing Woods' play during spring. Woods is strong, athletic and can also play the nose tackle position in Vandy's 3-4 scheme. The Commodores need versatility on defense, especially along the defensive line, and Woods could be a major fixture in Vandy's defensive plans this fall. With Vince Taylor gone, Woods could be in line for a starting spot when fall camp rolls around.
