John Schneider on Michael Bennett: We have to do what's best for the team

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider resolved his own contract situation with the team Sunday night, agreeing to terms on a five-year extension.

Now he’ll have to figure out what to do about the contract of one of the team’s key defensive players.

Speaking to John Clayton during an interview on 710 ESPN Seattle Tuesday, Schneider was asked about defensive end Michael Bennett, who is unhappy with his current deal.

"What I can tell you is that we obviously think he’s a hell of a football player," Schneider said.

"Like I said earlier, there’s 90 guys on this team, and everybody has their own story and situation, whether it’s personal or professional. And we’re always going to try to do what’s best for everybody. We have to do what’s best for the team first."

Bennett has two years remaining on his deal. ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported that Bennett’s agent, Doug Hendrickson, was scheduled to meet with the Seahawks this week about potentially tweaking his current contract.

Bennett recently indicated to The Huffington Post that his frustrations might be boiling over.

"It is never-ending," Bennett said. "Especially when people are getting new contracts every day. You sit there and you're like, 'Damn, really?' I'm just to the point where it's kind of like, if you don't think I'm valuable, then just get rid of me."

The Seahawks are set to begin training camp Saturday. The focus of the first day will be on whether or not Bennett is in attendance.
