Voters think baseball is not in Russell Wilson's future

Only 10 percent of the Sound-off Saturday voters think Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson could play baseball at the big league level, but 31 percent of the voters think he will give baseball a try at some point.

Wilson’s interest in baseball is a topic that won’t go away, especially with his comments on the HBO interview for "Real Sports," which airs Tuesday night.

“You never want to kill the dream of playing two sports,” Wilson said in the interview with Bryant Gumbel.

Asked what’s stopping him, Wilson said: “I don’t know. I may push the envelope a little bit one of these days. That's why the Texas Rangers got my rights. They want me to play. Jon Daniels, the GM, wants me to play. We were talking about it the other day.”

Daniels, however, said Saturday that he has no plans to push Wilson toward baseball.

“Russell has the competitiveness and work ethic to where he’d have a shot if he committed to baseball," Daniels told reporters. “Obviously, he’s got a pretty good thing going on with the Seahawks and we’re not going to get in the way of that. Playing quarterback is more intensive than the positions of other guys who have attempted to play both sports.”

So with all this talk about Wilson and baseball, I asked three Sound-off Saturday questions:

  1. Do you think Wilson will give professional baseball a shot sometime in the future?

  2. Should the Seahawks put a clause in Wilson's new contract about not playing baseball?

  3. Do you think Wilson has the ability to play baseball at the major league level?

Some people responded by simply saying it’s all a negotiating ploy in his contract talks. But most of the people who did vote think it’s unlikely Wilson ever will play baseball and only one out every 10 voters believe Wilson could make it to the major leagues.

As for the second question, 67 percent of the voters believe the Seahawks should put a clause in Wilson’s new contract stating he will not play baseball while under contract with the team.
