49ers Camp Report: Day 2

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers received their first injury scare of training camp when reserve running back Kendall Hunter went down with an apparent right-knee injury in Friday's practice.

Hunter was hurt while catching a swing pass. He went down to the grass, and several teammates plus coach Jim Harbaugh quickly attended to him. Hunter was able to walk off on his own power and was escorted to the locker room without a noticeable limp. He was receiving further evaluation Friday night.

The team did not provide any injury information.

With six weeks until the season starts, Hunter has a chance to be ready for Week 1 if the injury is not overly serious. He suffered a torn Achilles in 2012.

The 49ers have a crowded backfield, but Hunter is a trusted, versatile player. If he is healthy, he should easily make the team.

In other 49ers camp news:

  • Quarterback Colin Kaepernick had his moments in practice. Highlights included nice pass plays to tight end Derek Carrier and receiver Brandon Lloyd. However, Kaepernick threw a bad pass that linebacker Chase Thomas dropped, and he also fared poorly in an accuracy drill. What does it mean? Not much. It's July. It's what camp is for.

  • Receiver Bruce Ellington, a fourth-round pick by the 49ers in May, was activated from the non-football injury list, and he practiced Friday. He was injured while training on his own recently. Ellington had a great offseason session and is expected to play on offense and perhaps return punts.

  • The 49ers filled their 90th roster spot by signing receiver/tight end Kyle Nelson. The 49ers had an opening because holdout guard Alex Boone is on the did-not-report list.

  • Players got a look at the completed Levi's Stadium home locker room. The consensus? Rousing thumbs up.

  • Injured linebacker NaVorro Bowman has been spending a lot of time on the sideline. Bowman looks strong in the upper body. He has started running and hopes to return in November from the torn ACL he suffered in January during the NFC Championship Game in Seattle.

  • Second-year pass rusher Corey Lemonier had a nice day, showing good burst on multiple plays.

  • Continue to hear the 49ers are simply being cautious with running back Marcus Lattimore, and there have been no setbacks. He has yet to practice in training camp, and he has not played since a horrific 2012 knee injury while at South Carolina.

  • Defensive lineman Justin Smith and offensive tackle Anthony Davis continue to stay out of practice as they recover from shoulder injuries. Neither situation seems serious.

  • Quote of the day: Michael Wilhoite on the task of trying to replace the injured star Bowman at inside linebacker: "You are not replacing Joe Schmo, so you can't be Joe Schmo."
