Greg Roman likely to ride coach carousel

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Last week, we wrote to expect to hear Greg Roman’s name often when it comes to the coaching carousel, which is just about to heat up.

Tuesday, ESPN.com’s John Clayton reported that if the New York Jets fire Rex Ryan, Roman, the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive coordinator, would be on their short list.

It won’t stop there. The NFL Network reported Roman would be very interested in the Detroit Lions if there is an opening. Sunday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Lions’ ownership is on the fence about the future of coach Jim Schwartz, but it may be leaning toward keeping him.

Roman’s future may not be relegated to the NFL. There are strong reports Penn State coach Bill O’Brien will take the Houston Texans job. Roman reportedly interviewed for the Penn State job two years ago when O’Brien got it. Again, expect to hear more about this perhaps on a daily basis as the coaching world changes.

If Roman does get a job, I’d expect him to stay with the 49ers until their season is over.
