W2W4: San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers (5-1) are looking for the team’s sixth straight win on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs (2-3) at 4:05 p.m. ET at Qualcomm Stadium.

Here are three things we’ll be watching for on Sunday.

1. Contain Jamaal Charles: In Kansas City’s two wins, the Chiefs finished with at least 174 total rushing yards. Charles is the engine that makes Kansas City’s offense go. If the Chiefs can run the football and convert third downs, they can play keep away from Philip Rivers. Limiting Kansas City’s explosive running game with Charles and Knile Davis, along with getting off of the field on third down, will be critical for the Chargers.

2. Protect Rivers: The Chiefs are tied for eighth in the NFL with 15 sacks through six weeks. Justin Houston and Tamba Hali are two of the better outside rushing tandems in the league. And Dontari Poe is very active at nose tackle. San Diego’s offensive line will have its hands full on Sunday. It will be important for Rivers to get through his progressions and get the ball out quickly. And the Chargers will need to be effective running the football with Branden Oliver in order to slow down Kansas City’s potent pass rush.

3. Toughen up in red zone: The Chargers are last in the NFL in red zone defense, giving up a touchdown 75 percent of the time. San Diego’s defense faces one of the best red zone offenses in the league in Kansas City. The Chiefs score touchdowns inside the 20-yard line 70 percent of the time. Keeping Alex Smith inside the pocket near the goal line will be important. Smith’s ability to improvise outside the pocket and keep plays alive is an underrated aspect of his game.
