Chargers' Mike McCoy ranks No. 10 among NFL coaches for playing career

Good morning.

ESPN NFL Insider Kevin Seifert has a great read this morning, ranking the NFL coaches by their football playing careers. San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy is No. 10 on this list.

After transferring from Long Beach State, McCoy led the University of Utah to consecutive bowl games. He finished the 1993 season with the second-most passing yards in the country (3,860) and led the Utes to a 10-2 record in 1994.

McCoy’s pro ambitions took him to the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad in 1995, NFL Europe and the Canadian Football League before his retirement in 1999.

My take: McCoy can still spin it, as he shows during practice occasionally.

Ricky Henne of Chargers.com talks with San Diego offensive line coach Jeff Davidson about the progress his group made during the offseason.

My take: Davidson had some interesting comments about King Dunlap, who appears focused on having a bounce-back season in 2016.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell ranks the defensive triplets, or three best defensive players from each NFL team. The Chargers are ranked No. 24, with Jason Verrett, Brandon Flowers and Corey Liuget included on the list.

My take: I would replace Flowers and Liuget with Denzel Perryman and Melvin Ingram in terms of impact on San Diego’s defense if you go off of production from last season.

Alex Marvez and Kirk Morrison of Sirius XM NFL Radio talk with Joey Bosa’s agent Todd France about the rookie’s contract dispute with the Chargers in this audio link. John Spanos, president of football operations for the Chargers, also talked about the Bosa contract situation with Hank Bauer and Billy Ray Smith of The Mighty 1090 AM radio in this audio link.

My take: France makes salient points about maximizing Bosa’s opportunity to get the best deal possible in terms of the structure of the contract, but Spanos doesn’t appear ready to budge on the offset language portion of the deal. “All of the first-round picks that we’ve had in this system, all of the free agents and our star quarterback in Philip Rivers -- all of them have it,” Spanos said. “So we’re just trying to treat everybody the same.” Spanos went on to say the Chargers will work to do everything they can to get the Bosa deal done in time for training camp.
