First look at 2016 San Diego Chargers' 90-man roster

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Chargers are scheduled to host a rookie minicamp May 13-14 and start organized team activities May 23.

Phase II of offseason work begins Monday, with coaches now able to work with players on the field.

"I can't wait to get out there," Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said. "We've been staring at each other in plenty of meetings and talking to each other about it. You hear them in the weight room with the music going while we're upstairs in staff meetings and everything. We just want to get outside. We're football coaches. We want to get on the field and coach, that's what we do for a living."

With that in mind, I thought we should take a first look at the team's 90-man roster.

The Chargers didn't make any trades during this year's draft, adding eight picks and 20 undrafted free agents to increase the roster to 90 players. Of course, San Diego probably will add and release players throughout this offseason and leading up to training camp at the end of July, so this roster will inevitably change.

Chargers' Current Roster (90 players)

Quarterback (4): Starter -- Philip Rivers. Reserves -- Kellen Clemens, Bryn Renner, Mike Bercovici.

The skinny: I was surprised the Chargers did not select a developmental quarterback in this year's draft, , although they signed Bercovici, an undrafted rookie out of Arizona State. So Bercovici and Renner currently fill that role on the roster. Rivers is signed through 2019, and Clemens is a solid backup who knows the offense well. The Chargers can at least say they have the best QB in the AFC West.

Running back (7): Starter -- Melvin Gordon. Reserves -- RB: Danny Woodhead, Branden Oliver, Dreamius Smith, Kenneth Farrow, Chris Swain. FB: Derek Watt.

The skinny: It's a solid, diverse group. Gordon will be better in his second year, and I like the addition of a fullback in Watt, if he can make the roster. The Chargers only have so many snaps during a game, but Oliver needs more touches.

Receivers (11): Starters -- Keenan Allen, Travis Benjamin, Stevie Johnson. Reserves -- Dontrelle Inman, Javontee Herndon, Torrence Allen, Tyrell Williams, Isaiah Burse, Jamaal Jones, Deandre Reaves, Dom Williams.

The skinny: A pretty talented group led by Allen. The addition of Benjamin should help create space underneath for players like Johnson and Inman. I'm interested in seeing the improvement of players like Tyrell Williams and Herndon after each got reps on the field last season. I'm also interested to see how new receivers coach Nick Sirianni works with this group.

Tight end (7): Starter -- Antonio Gates. Reserves -- Jeff Cumberland, Hunter Henry, Sean McGrath, Asante Cleveland, Tim Semisch, Jay Rome.

The skinny: This position group has had the most turnover of any place on the roster, with Gates the only returning player who had snaps with the Chargers during the 2015 season. However, there's more talent and potential for growth with the addition of Henry, Cumberland and McGrath. The hope is San Diego will be more effective running the football, particularly at the edge of the defense.

Offensive line (16): Starters -- LT King Dunlap, LG Orlando Franklin, C Chris Watt, RG D.J. Fluker, RT Joe Barksdale. Reserves -- C Trevor Robinson, T Chris Hairston, G-T Kenny Wiggins, T Tyreek Burwell, C Max Tuerk, G Donavon Clark, G Michael Huey, G Sebastian Johansson, G Mike McQueen, T Tyler Johnstone, T Zeth Ramsay.

The skinny: How many games the Chargers win in 2016 hinges on whether this group can stay healthy and produce to their potential. If guys like Dunlap, Franklin and Watt can stay on the field, develop chemistry and dominate at the line of scrimmage, San Diego's offense has a chance to really control the football and the tempo of a game. If that doesn't happen, then we could see a repeat of 2015. One of the reasons the Chargers did not select a tackle in this year's draft is they like the potential of Burwell, an undrafted rookie out of Cincinnati in 2015.

Defensive line (11): Starters -- DE Corey Liuget, NT Brandon Mebane, DE Joey Bosa. Reserves -- NT Sean Lissemore, NT Ryan Carrethers, DE Tenny Palepoi, DE Darius Philon, DT Damion Square, DE Carlos Wray, DE Ben Gardner, DE Chuka Ndulue.

The skinny: The additions of Mebane and Bosa significantly improves the talent level of this group. The return of Palepoi from a season-ending leg injury in 2015 provides depth. And the Chargers hope the addition of new defensive line coach Giff Smith improves the overall production from this group.

Linebackers (13): Starters -- OLB Melvin Ingram, OLB Jeremiah Attaochu, ILB Denzel Perryman, ILB Manti Te'o. Reserves -- ILB Nick Dzubnar, ILB Joshua Perry, OLB Tourek Williams, OLB Kyle Emanuel, OLB Brock Hekking, OLB Jatavis Brown, OLB Chris Landrum, OLB Tyler Marcordes, ILB Shaq Petteway.

The skinny: Perhaps the most talented position group on the defense, the linebackers should benefit from an improved defensive line in front of them. If healthy, one player who should take another step in development is Emanuel, who played with a lingering shoulder injury his rookie season.

Safeties (7): Starters -- Jahleel Addae, Dwight Lowery. Reserves -- Darrell Stuckey, Adrian Phillips, Matt Daniels, Dexter McCoil, Adrian McDonald.

The skinny: With Eric Weddle gone, this position group has the most question marks heading into the 2016 season. Lowery and Addae need to develop chemistry quickly, and it's reasonable to question why the Chargers did not select a developmental safety in this year's draft. Overall depth could be an issue.

Cornerbacks (10): Starters -- Brandon Flowers, Jason Verrett. Reserves -- Casey Hayward, Craig Mager, Steve Williams, Greg Ducre, Richard Crawford, Larry Scott, Trevor Williams, Terrell Chestnut.

The skinny: I like the talent, depth and versatility of this group, although they could use another big corner. It will be interesting to see how the training camp competition shakes out between Flowers and Hayward for the starting job opposite Verrett, Regardless of what happens, both should play. After dealing with a hamstring issue midway through the season, Mager came on and showed the he belonged at the end of his rookie year.

Specialty (4): Starters -- K Josh Lambo, P Drew Kaser, LS Mike Windt. Reserve -- P Kasey Redfern.

The skinny: You don't draft a punter in the sixth round and not keep him on your final roster, but Redfern should keep Kaser honest.
