Chargers' offensive line ranked No. 23 by PFF

Good morning.

Khaled Elsayed of Pro Football Focus ranked every offensive line in the NFL entering Week 5, and the San Diego Chargers' front five was No. 23.

The Chargers were rated 23rd both in pass blocking and run blocking according to PFF’s metrics, and finished 16th in penalties. Elsayed believes the Chargers have talent up front, but lack consistency because of all the moving parts due to injuries.

My take: The Chargers certainly could benefit from solidifying and sticking with five guys for an extended period of time. Along with that, San Diego needs to figure out what it does best on offense during the next four or five weeks so they can have a consistent game plan.

Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports from the NFL owners meetings in New York that the league expects the San Diego Chargers, the St. Louis Rams and the Oakland Raiders to all file for relocation to Los Angeles in January. However, uncertainty remains on whether owners favor the Carson or Inglewood project, and that could work in San Diego’s favor.

My take: There’s still some negotiating to be done before there’s certainty on where the Chargers will be in 2016, which means the City of San Diego still has faint hope of keeping the Chargers.

Ricky Henne of Chargers.com writes that San Diego running back Melvin Gordon is ready for prime time, and looking forward to his first Monday Night Football matchup.

“There is a little more juice to those games, so I’m excited to see how the feeling is,” Gordon said.

My take: I’m interested to see how Gordon performs as well, particularly against a Pittsburgh defense that’s pretty good at stopping the run.

Steve Palazzolo of Pro Football Focus places Philip Rivers at No. 8 in his ranking of the top 10 quarterbacks entering Week 5. He notes that Rivers’ 1.4 passing grade on PFF’s scale was his best of the season.

My take: I thought Rivers did a good job of taking what the defense gave him and minimizing mistakes. And that will be an important thing to do again facing a talented Pittsburgh front seven defensively.
