Chargers' Keenan Allen makes ESPN's all-under-25 team

Good morning.

In this ESPN Insider pieceInsider, senior draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. and NFL Insider Mike Sando produce a list ranking the top 25 NFL players under 25 years old.

Oakland Raiders linebacker Khalil Mack tops the list, followed by Dallas Cowboys' left tackle Tyron Smith and Carolina Panthers middle linebacker Luke Kuechly.

San Diego Chargers receiver Keenan Allen is No. 24 on the list -- the only San Diego player who makes the cut.

My take: Cornerback Jason Verrett probably deserves consideration, but has to put together a full season of productive plays first.

Michael Gehlken of The San Diego Union-Tribune offers a meaty profile on running back Melvin Gordon. It’s worth your time this morning.

My take: Gordon’s work ethic really comes through in the piece, and that commitment to being great is why I believe he will have success in the NFL.

Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic of ESPN Radio say the Chargers will not reach nine wins in this video.

My take: The duo believes the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills will be better teams than the Chargers in the AFC, but San Diego has a better quarterback than both of those teams in Philip Rivers.

Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus grades every player from the first round of this year’s draft through the preseason. Gordon receivers a -2.5 grade.

Monson: "Gordon has started two preseason games for San Diego, but he has played a total of just 28 snaps. He has 20 carries for just 45 yards (2.3 YPC), with an impressive 35 of them (77.8 percent) coming after contact. He has yet to show his best."

My take: It’s hard to argue with Monson’s assessment. Gordon hasn’t had much room to run during exhibition play, but for the most part has made the most of his opportunities.
