Chargers partnering with Rams in Inglewood gaining steam

Good morning.

According to Bernie Miklasz of 101 sports.com in St. Louis, momentum seems to be shifting from the Carson project led by the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders to the Inglewood project led by St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke as the preferred stadium alternative in Los Angeles.

Miklasz couches his report by saying most of what he’s heard is speculative, with no sources willing to go on record. But Miklasz has been reporting and closely following the relocation process, so it’s worth noting.

Miklasz goes on to say the NFL owners committee on Los Angeles opportunities that includes Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, New York Giants owner John Mara, Houston Texans owner Bob McNair, Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson and Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II will likely have a strong say on what happens in Los Angeles.

Jason Cole of Bleacher Report also reports the Chargers and Rams in Inglewood is gaining steam. And Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk voiced a similar message in his interview with Dave Palet and Jeff Dotseth of Xtra 1360 Fox sports Radio, which you can listen to in this audio link.

My take: Although the reports are speculative, they further emphasize that there’s no clear solution for a team relocating to Los Angeles, which is why it makes sense for the NFL to consider waiting another year for more clarity in the home markets.

Pat Kirwan of CBS Sports has the Chargers ranked No. 16 in his NFL power rankings.

Kirwan: “Philip Rivers and the offense will score points, but can the defense live up to their end of the bargain?”

My take: The defense has played well this preseason and San Diego’s offense will have to prove it can score points in the meaningful moments of a game for this team to get over the top. Just go back to losses against the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs in the backstretch of last season.

Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes that all five rookie draft picks could play in Week 1, and as many as 10 rookies could stick around in 2015.

My take: That’s a pretty good haul by Chargers general manager Tom Telesco and his scouting department, as the team looked to get younger this year.

Ricky Henne of Chargers.com provides a scouting report on San Diego’s last preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers.

My take: I’m interested to see how the battle for the last couple receiver spots shakes out between Dontrelle Inman, Austin Pettis, Javontee Herndon and Tyrell Williams.
