Tenny Palepoi placed on IR with foot injury, Chargers sign DT Luther Robinson

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy told reporters after practice on Monday that defensive lineman Tenny Palepoi was placed on the reserved-injured list, ending his 2015 season after suffering a fractured foot three days earlier in training camp.

"This is the part of the business that sucks," McCoy said. "I hate to say it, but that's just the truth. A guy that works as hard as he has, if you come in the office this summer to pick something up, he is one of the guys here all the time.

"He spent endless hours. With the opportunity we gave him, I remember calling him on the phone after the draft (last year) and telling him what we were going to do with him. He's made the most out of every single opportunity he's had. He had an outstanding year last year, and it sucks to be honest with you."

The Chargers signed Palepoi, 24, as an undrafted rookie free agent in May 2014. The Utah product earned a spot on the 53-man roster during training camp, serving as a rotational player along the defensive line. Palepoi played in 264 snaps on defense, finishing with 16 tackles.

Palepoi also have four tackles for loss, two pressures and a quarterback hit.

At 6-1 and 300 pounds, Palepoi provided versatility up front, with an ability to play defensive tackle and defensive end in a 3-4. While not the most stout defender up front against the run, Palepoi was disruptive by pushing the pocket in passing situations, remained active in pursuit of the ball carrier and used his hands well to fight off of blocks.

"He'll be back without a doubt," McCoy said. "He'll be stronger than ever, and he'll be in great shape just like he was coming into camp. You'll see him the rest of the year. He'll be around. He's one of the guys that will stick around, and he wants to be a part of it. He'll go on the road trips when he can and things like that. So it is just unfortunate, but he’ll be back."

With an open spot on the 90-man roster, the Chargers signed defensive tackle Luther Robinson. At 6-3, 301 pounds, the Miami product played in five games for the Green Bay Packers in 2014 after signing as an undrafted free agent, recording two tackles with one pass deflection on the year.

He was placed on Green Bay's injured reserve list in December with a calf injury.

Robinson, 24, appeared in 33 games with three starts at Miami. He recorded 40 tackles, two tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.
