Morning links: Chargers fans consider suing NFL to block team from moving

Good morning.

Steve Bosh of KUSI TV in San Diego reports that a group of San Diego Chargers fans, led by former San Diego city attorney Mike Aguirre, is mulling over the possibility of filing an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL to block the team from moving to Los Angeles.

According to the report, the group would file suit only if a stadium proposal to keep the team in San Diego fails.

Derek Togerson of NBC San Diego reports that Mark Fabiani, point person on the stadium issue for the Chargers, responded this way to the possible lawsuit: “You’re joking, right?”

My take: Fans are upset and looking for ways to both show their frustration and keep the Chargers in San Diego. Filing a lawsuit against the Chargers certainly is one of those ways, but it would be an uphill climb for a lawsuit like this to succeed.

Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Chargers outside linebacker Melvin Ingram has lost 20 pounds, reporting to offseason work at 246 with the hope that carrying less weight will help him stay healthy for a full season.

My take: It certainly can’t hurt. Ingram has played a full, 16-game season just once in his three years in the NFL. The Chargers are counting on Ingram to help ignite an inconsistent pass rush. Ingram has just six sacks in 29 games.

Bryan Alexander of USA Today reports the Rolling Stones played at Petco Park in San Diego on Sunday, acknowledging the possibility of the Chargers relocating to the Los Angeles market.

Said Mick Jagger: “We are having such a great time in San Diego. It’s so beautiful here. Why would anyone want to leave? Especially the Chargers.”

My take: I’m sure Jagger’s comments drew cheers from the crowd, which included Chargers president of football operations John Spanos. Qualcomm Stadium could have held more folks than Petco, but the Stones chose Petco instead – another reason why a new stadium is needed here.
