Chargers pre-draft visit tracker

SAN DIEGO -- Like all NFL teams, the San Diego Chargers use pre-draft visits to recruit potential undrafted rookie free agents they’d like to bring into camp.

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco also provided a few other reasons for scheduling the visits during his pre-draft conversation with reporters last Wednesday, including taking a closer look at players with medical concerns, character concerns or getting a better evaluation of their football knowledge.

For fans and reporters covering the teams, the visits aren’t necessarily an indication of which players the team will select in the draft. However, pre-draft visits do help provide a blueprint for the type of players the Chargers may be looking for in the upcoming draft or in free agency.

Teams can have up to 30 players in for pre-draft visits. In addition to that, teams can also have a local day -- for San Diego-area prospects for the Chargers. Players on local pro day visits are not included in San Diego’s 30 players allowed for pre-draft visits. The deadline for teams to host players on pre-draft visits was last Wednesday.

So the following is a list of players who reportedly traveled to San Diego for a pre-draft visit. I also listed players the team worked out away from the facility:

Ameer Abdullah, RB, Nebraska: Abdullah said in his draft diary for USA Today that he’s talked quite a bit to the Chargers in the lead-up to the draft, and running back is a position of need for San Diego.

Jay Ajayi, RB, Boise State: Chargers running backs coach Ollie Wilson attended Ajayi’s pro day and helped run his workout.

Arik Armstead, DL, Oregon: Chargers defensive line coach Don Johnson worked out Armstead at his pro day.

Bryce Callahan, CB, Rice: Callahan traveled to San Diego for a visit with the Chargers, according to DraftInsider.net.

Tevin Coleman, RB, Indiana: Coleman had a scheduled pre-draft visit with the Chargers, according to the National Football Post.

Titus Davis, WR, Central Michigan: Davis traveled to San Diego to visit Chargers Park, according to U-T San Diego.

Bud Dupree, OLB, Kentucky: The Chargers were one of a handful of teams that talked to Dupree after his pro day.

Chris Dunkley, CB/KR, University of South Florida: The Tampa Bay Time reports Dunkley visited the Chargers earlier this month. He's likely a late-round prospect or priority undrafted free agent.

Cameron Erving, OL, Florida State: Chargers offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris worked him out during his pro day.

Garrett Grayson, QB, Colorado State: The Chargers had a private workout with Grayson.

Randy Gregory, OLB Nebraska: According to U-T San Diego, Gregory visited Chargers Park last week. Gregory tested positive for marijuana and could fall down the draft board, so the Chargers appear to be doing their due diligence in case he’s available at No. 17.

Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin: Chargers director of college scouting Kevin Kelly attended Gordon’s pro day and met with the running back after his workout.

Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA: The Chargers attended Hundley’s pro day and worked him out privately in Los Angeles.

Tre' Jackson, OL, Florida State: Chargers offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris worked Jackson out during his pro day. Jackson also had dinner with the Chargers before his pro day workout, according to DraftInsider.net.

Cole Manhart, OL, Nebraska-Kearney: According to USA Today, Manhart traveled to San Diego for a pre-draft visit.

Ali Marpet, OL, Hobart: The Division III prospect shined at the Senior Bowl and could be a mid-round prospect to boost San Diego’s interior offensive line. ESPN Insider Adam Caplan reported that Marpet visited the Chargers last week.

Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon: A contingent of Chargers brass traveled to Eugene to meet and work out Mariota.

Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor: Fox Sports reported Petty had a pre-draft visit scheduled with the Chargers.

DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville: According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, Parker said the Chargers have met with him.

Tyler Sambrailo, OL, Colorado State: ESPN Insider Adam Caplan reported Sambrailo worked out for the Chargers.

Jaelen Strong, WR, Arizona State: Chargers receivers coach Fred Graves attended Strong’s pro day.

Shaq Thompson, OLB, Washington: According to Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com, Chargers linebackers coach Mike Nolan attended Thompson’s pro day and had dinner with him the night before the workout.
