PITTSBURGH -- Brandon Flowers left San Diego without a contract but the free-agent cornerback is not headed to Pittsburgh.

Flowers has no plans to visit the Steelers, according to a source, despite the latter’s reported interest in him. Flowers met with the Chargers earlier this week but the two sides did not agree to a deal before the end of his visit.

The Steelers are keeping their options open as far as adding to veteran players to their roster.

“I’m not opposed to anything that will increase our chances of winning. We’re open to all possibilities,” coach Mike Tomlin said at the conclusion of offseason practices.

Flowers is an intriguing player for a team that has long-term questions at cornerback. Cortez Allen is the only long-term starter at the position right now, and he is entering the final year of his contract.

Flowers is only 28, and he made the Pro Bowl last season after recording 68 tackles and a sack and intercepting a pass in 13 games. Flowers, who started all six seasons he was in Kansas City, has 17 career interceptions. The Chiefs released the 5-9, 187-pounder last week after he did not prove to be a good fit in coach Andy Reid’s system.

They netted $7.5 million in salary-cap savings this year by cutting ties with Flowers, a second-round pick in 2008.

The Steelers are $5.856 million under the salary cap, according to ESPN Stats & Information, after signing all of their draft picks. That could limit how much they would be able to offer Flowers if he does return their interest at some point.
