On Friday night, Sean Davis was the star of an NFL draft party in the Washington, D.C., area. He was nervous, so he escaped to a back room and charged his phone, awaiting a call from the Indianapolis Colts or the New England Patriots, two of the teams that showed the most interest in the Maryland safety.

Then, late in the second round, his phone lit up. He saw the '412' area code.

"I thought, 'there's no way,'" Davis said. "I thought it was a telemarketer."

No, Sean, that would be Mike Tomlin. He's head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

When recalling draft night, Davis -- the 58th overall pick by the Steelers -- jokingly said he was only half-expecting a telemarketer on the other end. But he was in disbelief over what was happening.

"It was the right call," Davis said Wednesday. "It was beautiful. I just wasn't expecting Pittsburgh. I took a visit there, but didn't know they were going to draft me."

Tomlin asked Davis if he was ready to be a Steeler. Davis told him, 'Let's do it, I'm ready to go right now.' The team immediately started coordinating Davis' travel plans to Pittsburgh. Davis had to celebrate first.

"We all jumped around, celebrating, hugging, crying," Davis said.

Davis, who will attend Steelers rookie minicamp Friday as part of a seven-person draft class, said he had a special moment with his father, Sean Sr., who worked two jobs while overcoming Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He's been in remission for more than a year. His dad is a big Tomlin fan.

"All this hard work is finally here," the two told each other after the hugs. "We hit our mark."

Now, as he starts his Steelers career, Davis isn't jumping to any conclusions.

"I'm not putting any pressure on myself, I just want to contribute to whatever I can do, get in the system and learn from the vets," Davis said.
