Trey Burton is Eagles' fourth tight end

Rookie free agents have a difficult time earning a spot on the 53-man roster in the NFL.

Imagine how difficult it is for a rookie free agent who would be a team’s fourth-string tight end?

That’s exactly what happened when the Philadelphia Eagles decided to keep Trey Burton as the fourth tight end behind Brent Celek, Zach Ertz and James Casey.

Burton was very impressive through training camp and the preseason with nine receptions and the ability to block and perform on special teams.

And it resulted with a roster spot.

“He's really athletic. When you talk about guys who are backups, his contributions on teams, his ability to contribute on special teams, is important,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman told Philadelphiaeagles.com. “Those guys are hard to find, big bodies who can run and catch, so he was an interesting guy for us.”

Burton played a number of positions during his career at the University of Florida. He competed at tight end, wide receiver, halfback, fullback and even quarterback.

Burton completed his college career with 141 carries for 720 yards and 16 touchdowns along with 107 receptions for 976 yards and four touchdowns.
