Najee Goode returns to fluid linebacker situation

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Eagles announced a new one-year contract for linebacker Najee Goode Wednesday.

That makes it clear the team plans to keep Goode, a backup inside linebacker and special-teamer for the last two years, around for another season.

It is less clear what the Eagles plan for the rest of their linebacker corps. New defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is planning to run a 4-3 base scheme, so there should be some shuffling going on.

Connor Barwin, who went to the Pro Bowl last year as an outside linebacker, is expected to move to defensive end.

“He played end in Houston in a very similar scheme,” Schwartz said Wednesday on 97.5 The Fanatic. “We played him when I was [head coach] in Detroit. He gave us a lot of problems.”

If Barwin and Brandon Graham return to the defensive line meeting room, that takes care of some of the crowd in the linebacker room. The four linebackers who need to find places in the scheme are Mychal Kendricks, who was signed to a contract extension last summer, Kiko Alonso, Jordan Hicks and DeMeco Ryans.

All four played inside last year. Kendricks and Alonso have played outside in the past. Hicks said after the season that he feels comfortable either inside or outside. Ryans is a middle linebacker, but there’s never certainty that a 32-year-old with a $4.5 million salary-cap number will be around.

In his appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic, Schwartz said he would use offseason workouts and training camp to figure out who goes where. Goode will get a better chance than he did last year, when the Eagles had just acquired Alonso, drafted Hicks and extended Kendricks. The inside linebacker spots were overcrowded.

“Not everybody was a great fit for the 3-4 [scheme],” Schwartz said. “Kendricks might be one of those guys. He’s an explosive downhill guy. I think we can get him back to that.

“I had Kiko in Buffalo for about four months [before he tore his ACL]. He had played [middle] linebacker the year before and we had decided to move him to what we call 'stack' linebacker. We’ll try to find what fits those guys best."
