Eagles' unis: not kelly green, but not bad

PHILADELPHIA -- Fans of the Philadelphia Eagles will argue about almost anything -- LeSean McCoy vs. DeMarco Murray, Sam Bradford or Nick Foles -- except for uniforms. When it comes to the team’s appearance, it’s nearly unanimous. Most fans prefer the old kelly green look to the midnight green uniforms brought on by owner Jeff Lurie in the 1990s.

So it was interesting when ESPN’s Uni Watch -- a gentleman named Paul Lukas -- gave the Eagles’ uniform high marks in his annual NFL power rankings. Here was a national expert taking sides, approving of the generally despised midnight green jerseys! What a scandal!

The arguing nature of Eagles fans was prepared to let loose.

But Lukas managed a pretty neat little trick here. While ranking the Eagles’ uniforms at No. 8 overall, Lukas also gave a nod of recognition to the old color scheme. At the end of a positive review of the current uniform, Lukas adds, parenthetically, “(Although they'd look even better if they traded in the midnight green for kelly, which many fans have been requesting for years, and if they ditched the black alternates.)”

Nicely done, and fair. It is possible to prefer the kelly green uniform of the 1960s, '70s and '80s while still appreciating the clean lines and the iconic helmets the team has worn for the past couple decades. The classic look was better, but the current uniform doesn’t look like the Cincinnati Bengals or the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In short, the Eagles’ uniforms could be better, but they also certainly could be a lot worse.
