Nonconference primer: Oregon Ducks

We continue our look at each Pac-12 team's nonconference opponents in 2015.

OREGON

Eastern Washington, Saturday, Sept. 5

  • Coach: Beau Baldwin (67-25), eighth year

  • 2014 record: 11-3, 7-1 Big Sky

  • Returning starters: 7 offense, 6 defense

  • Offensive headliners: Junior quarterback Jordan West is the heir apparent to Vernon Adams' throne at Eastern Washington. During the Eagles’ spring game the offense scored 39 points and 407 yards on 60 plays, so though it is without Adams, the Eagles seems to be up to their usual pace and style. Doing that against an FBS opponent is a whole different problem, though. Expect wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Kendrick Bourne to make West (or whichever QB that eventually wins the job) look good.

  • Defensive headliners: The Eagles return just two of their top five tacklers from a season ago, but ASU transfer Rashad Wadood and Todd Raynes should pace the secondary while young players like Alek Kacmarcik and Jake Gall should prove important.

  • The skinny: Adams' transfer is what gives this game some serious added drama. Even if Adams isn’t Oregon’s starter in Week 1, his added knowledge of EWU’s offense and defense should help the Ducks pick apart the Eagles that much better. And with as productive of an offense as Eastern Washington has had, expect them to get theirs at least a little bit (think Wyoming last season -- a bend a bit but don’t break effort from the Ducks’ defense in the season opener should work just fine).

At Michigan State, Saturday, Sept. 12

  • Coach: Mark Dantonio (75-31), ninth year

  • 2014 record: 11-2, 7-1 (Big Ten)

  • Returning starters: 7 offensive, 7 defensive

  • Offensive headliners: Quarterback Connor Cook chose to stay in East Lansing for his final year of eligibility after leading the Big Ten in passing in 2014. Though his top two receivers did leave MSU, Cook has options in Macgarrett Kings Jr., Aaron Burbridge and R.J. Shelton. Though the Spartans are looking for a new top running back, they do return four offensive line starters, which should help ease the transition.

  • Defensive headliners: Defensive lineman Shilique Calhoun will be looking to make a statement against the Ducks considering his poor performance in this matchup a year ago. Ed Davis, Riley Bullough, Darien Harris and Joel Heath are all players to watch as the Spartans transition into the post-Pat Narduzzi era.

  • The skinny: Dantonio will downplay the idea of this being a revenge game for the Spartans. But let’s be serious, Cook and Calhoun have said they want a national title in the 2015-16 season and their first chance to make a statement for their bid to the College Football Playoff will be in this game. A season ago this was the game that pushed all sorts of question marks into the equation after the Spartans looked pretty docile through much of the game in Eugene. Now, MSU welcomes Oregon to East Lansing in a rematch that’s going to be the biggest Week 2 game in the nation. No season is completely won on the second Saturday of the season, but statements can be made at any time and this is going to be a huge opportunity for the Ducks and the Spartans to do just that.

Georgia State, Saturday, Sept. 19

  • Coach: Trent Miles (1-23), third year

  • 2014 record: 1-11, 0-8 Sun Belt

  • Returning starters: 8 offensive, 10 defensive

  • Offensive headliners: Quarterback Nick Arbuckle threw for 3,283 yards a season ago and Georgia State also returns three of his top four targets from a year ago. Wide receivers Donovan Harden and Robert Davis as well as tight end Joel Ruiz are three big names to watch.

  • Defensive headliners: The Panthers return their top four tacklers from the 2014 season (linebackers Joseph Peterson and Trey Payne, cornerback Bruce Dukes, safety Tarris Batiste) as well as their entire defensive line. However, that’s also the defense that gave up 43 points per game as well as 303 rushing yards per game. That said, with 10 returning defensive starters, the Panthers should have a better grasp on some of the blitz schemes and defensive sets.

  • The skinny: Georgia State is a veteran team that received an influx of emotion when it received several hungry UAB transfers who had to go through losing their program. But it’s still a program that’s just three seasons removed from joining FBS football and that doesn’t bode well for a group on the road in Eugene in the final week of the Ducks’ Pac-12 tuneup.
