Oregon State defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake discusses his move from Utah

One potentially eyebrow-raising Pac-12 coaching development of this offseason was the move of defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake from Utah to Oregon State. Sports Illustrated's Lindsay Schnell wrote about it last week. Now, David Fox of Athlon Sports has also profiled Sitake in this piece, which further examines the coach's move and some of the strategies he's implementing with the Beavers. The article points out that Sitake, a former fullback at BYU, actually spends time teaching defensive players offensive concepts.

Sitake's approach delivered hard-hitting results at Utah, but he has his work cut out for him at Oregon State. The Beavers are tasked with replacing nine starters on the defensive side of the ball, and recently concluded spring practice was their first foray into that uncharted territory. Gina Mizell's report discusses the effort, including Sitake's decision to switch the defense from a 4-3 to a flexible 3-4 alignment.

That same piece also examines Oregon State's quarterback battle, the most publicized development of this offseason. Seth Collins and Nick Mitchell are duking it out, and this article looked at Collins' solid performance in last weekend's spring game.

With spring practice over, the Beavers now have about four months to muscle up in the weight room before the Gary Andersen era begins in earnest. It will be the first time since 2003 that Oregon State opens a season under a new coach. Even in 2003, the Beavers were familiar with their guy, as Mike Riley was returning for his second stint at Oregon State. This is a truly fresh era in Corvallis.
