Eleven years ago Wednesday, Pat Tillman sacrificed his life after giving up a career in the NFL to serve in the U.S. Army.

From The Pat Tillman Foundation website: "On the evening of April 22, 2004, Pat's unit was ambushed as it traveled through the rugged, canyon terrain of eastern Afghanistan. His heroic efforts to provide cover for fellow soldiers as they escaped from the canyon led to his untimely and tragic death via fratricide."

Arizona State still honors Tillman in practice by awarding the Tillman uniform to football players who have shown a relentless commitment on and off the field (it also appears as though other sports, such as ASU women's golf, have similar traditions), and today the rest of the country came together to honor him as well.

All across the country this weekend, Arizona State alums and the Pat Tillman Foundation are putting on Pat's Runs, a 4.2 mile run/walk (4.2 to honor Tillman's number at ASU, 42) that raises money for the Tillman Scholars.
