Stefen Wisniewski's time with Raiders could be coming to end

Stefen Wisniewski was destined to be an Oakland Raider.

I once joked with him that he was the most predictable No. 48 overall draft pick in NFL history. He agreed. Now, he could be on his way out of Oakland.

While anything can happen, I expect Wisniewski, Oakland’s starting center, to test the free agent market when it begins at 4 p.m. ET next Tuesday. If Wisniewski hits the market, there will be a good chance he will leave. The two sides have been in contact, but, thus far, there hasn’t been any urgency to get a deal done.

When the late Al Davis took Wisniewski in the second round of the 2011 draft, it was assumed Wisniewski would be a Raider for life. His uncle was former Raiders star offensive lineman Steve Wisniewski. He was a coach on Oakland’s staff when his nephew was drafted.

A solid player, Wisniewski will likely command a decent market in free agency. But if Wisniewski isn’t a Raider after next week, it might not be all his choice.

Oakland, flush with salary cap room, can easily keep Wisniewski if it wishes. Or it could look for an upgrade. One potential target is Kansas City’s Rodney Hudson. Hudson is widely considered one of the better centers in the NFL. He will be more expensive than Wisniewski, but it might be an avenue Oakland pursues.

Again, nothing is final until it happens, but the odds of Wisniewski not returning to Oakland now seem highly possible.
