Antonio Smith knows the weight of a long losing streak

OAKLAND -- All Antonio Smith wants to do is smile on a Sunday afternoon.

It’s been so long.

After another gut-wrenching defeat, Smith was fighting his emotions Sunday.

“I just want to smile on Sunday, that’s it,” the Oakland Raiders defensive lineman said. “This locker room deserves a win.”

The Raiders fell to 0-6 Sunday after a 24-13 home loss to Arizona. The Raiders are the NFL’s only winless team and have lost 12 straight games dating to last November. This start is Oakland’s worst since 1962. For a team that hasn’t had a winning season since 2002, this has been difficult to digest.

Unfortunately for Smith, it is particularly difficult for him. He is in the midst of a personal 20-game losing streak. As a member of the Houston Texans last season, Smith was part of a team that lost its final 14 games.

Winning is precious to Smith. He lit up three weeks ago when interim Oakland coach Tony Sparano addressed the team for the first time after taking over for Dennis Allen. Sparano struck a chord with Smith because he said his goal was to help the team win so the players could smile on Sundays. “Winning is a wonderful thing,” Smith said then.

Sunday, though, there were no smiles. All there was was concern.

“We have to get that win soon or we will be getting into dangerous territory,” Smith said. “I’ve seen it before.”

That “dangerous territory” Smith was referring to, of course, was facing the reality of never winning. He didn’t want to delve further into the subject.

“We just work too hard,” he said quietly.
