Reece focused on winning, not touches

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Marcel Reece said all he cares about is victories, not touches. Right now, he isn’t getting either. It's becoming a topic surrounding the Oakland Raiders.

Reece has four touches in the Raiders’ 0-2 start. Sunday, against the Houston Texans, he played about a third of the snaps. A training camp storyline was that the Raiders were going to try to get him more involved. Yet, his touches have only been on the decline over the past few seasons. He had 78 touches in 2013 -- down from 111 in the 2012 season.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick praised Reece this week in preparation for Sunday’s game. Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Olson said Reece has not become a lost part of the offense.

“It’s still there,” said Olson of the plan to use Reece. “Believe me, I am aware of it. We had some things, again, designed. We have to be a little bit aware early in the game of getting him more involved early. … He’s a team guy all the way, so if we’re winning and he’s not getting the ball, he’s not going to be concerned about it. If we’re losing and he’s not getting the ball, then we have to find ways to get him the ball. We’ll continue to look at ways we can utilize him in our base package.”

Reece admitted that he’d like more touches, but he understands game plans change week to week.

“Every offensive player wants to get the ball as many times as they can, so that goes unsaid, really,” Reece said. “If we’re winning and I don’t touch the ball then I think that sits well with me. We haven’t won yet, so I’m just trying to do whatever I can to help this team win and make plays on the field.”
