Raiders, Derek Carr looking to pad their stats as they enter training camp

NAPA, Calif. -- A couple of stats and trends to keep an eye on as the Oakland Raiders officially report to training camp Thursday, courtesy of ESPN Stats & Information:

While it already has been well-documented that the Raiders are looking for their first winning season since 2002 as well as their first playoff appearance since that same season, when they played in the Super Bowl, they also are trying to avoid a dubious distinction.

Yes, the future does seem bright but if Oakland has another season of 8-8 or worse, the Raiders would have 14 straight non-winning seasons, equaling the worst such stretch in the league since the schedule was increased to 16 games in 1978. They would tie the Cincinnati Bengals from 1991 through 2004 and Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1983 through 1996, who each had 14 consecutive non-winning seasons.

Oakland already is tied with the Arizona Cardinals, whose stretch of 13 straight non-winning seasons from 1985 through 1997 began when they called St. Louis home.

The Raiders were 8-8 in both 2010 and 2011.

Looking for a more positive note?

Yes, we’ve already gone over how Derek Carr’s 53 touchdown passes in his first two seasons are the second-most through two years in NFL history, trailing only Hall of Famer Dan Marino’s 68.

So with 27 TD passes this season, Carr will become the fifth QB in league annals to throw for at least 80 touchdowns in his first three seasons.

Marino (98 TDs from 1983-85), Andrew Luck (86 from 2012-14), Peyton Manning (85 from 1998-2000) and Andy Dalton (80 from 2011-13) currently comprise the list.

If Carr equals his 32 TD passes of a year ago, which were the second-most in franchise history to Daryle Lamonica’s 34 in 1969, Carr would tie Manning.
