What's left from Oakland Raiders' 2014 free-agent class

Last year, the Oakland Raiders used the majority of their more than $60 million of salary-cap room on older, declining players. They changed their approach this year with a similar bounty of cap space.

Oakland has signed 11 players in 2015, none of whom are over the age of 28. Last year’s moves were clearly a mistake and the Raiders have cut three players they added last year: defensive end LaMarr Woodley, quarterback Matt Schaub (acquired in a trade) and defensive lineman Antonio Smith. A fourth, running back Maurice Jones-Drew, retired. He would have likely been released if he hadn't retired. Two others, cornerbacks Tarell Brown and Carlos Rogers, are free agents the team currently has no interest in bringing back.

Here is a look at the remaining significant 2014 veteran additions and where they stand moving forward:

Austin Howard: This is a big year for Howard. He signed a five-year , $30 million deal last year. The Raiders played him at right guard, but he struggled. The new Oakland staff is moving him to right tackle, the same position he played with the Jets. Howard is going to training camp in a competition with young Menelik Watson, but Howard is the favorite. If he loses the competition, he will likely be released.

James Jones: Jones was a solid player last year. He had a team-high 73 catches. He was a favorite target of quarterback Derek Carr, who often looked to Jones on third down and in the red zone. Jones, 31, should start for another season.

Donald Penn: Penn bailed Oakland out after they let Jared Veldheer walk in free agency and endured the Rodger Saffold failed physical fiasco. Penn had a rebound year in Oakland and is an anchor to the offensive line.

Justin Tuck: Tuck, 32, signed a two-year, $10 million deal last year. He was average, collecting five sacks. He had his moments, and he is a great leader. I think the Raiders would like to see him in more of a rotational role to keep him fresh and healthy. But he surely has some short-term value.
