Oakland Raiders mailbag: Why Dan Williams?

Oakland Raiders weekend mail call:

Mikey from San Jose wants to know why Dan Williams is the Raiders’ new defensive tackle instead of Terrance Knighton.

Bill Williamson: I think the Raiders felt like Williams has more long-term capability. Knighton is a fine, fine player. Some people think he’s the best run stuffer in the NFL. But he has battled weight issues and I think teams were nervous about giving a big payday to a 30-year-old with weight problems. The Raiders think Williams may be a safer call.

Bill from Philadelphia wants to know what the penalty is if the Raiders don’t reach the minimum salary cap threshold.

BW: All the details are here. The Raiders have until February 2017 to reach the threshold. But they have to spend most of their cap this year and next year to reach it. The penalty, though, is not overly steep. Any team that doesn’t reach the threshold by the deadline has to divvy up the difference between the roster and the roster at that time. Thus, it is not as if teams will be fined or lose draft picks if some money is left on the table.

Derek from Oakland wants to know if I think punter Marquette King will be on the roster this year.

BW: Yes. He is a restricted free agent and another team make him an offer that the Raiders can match. It is not out of the question that he'll get offer, but I think King will be a Raider and, at some point, I can see him getting a long-term deal from Oakland. He has a live leg and big potential. Plus, he is a team-first guy and he wants to be great.
