Legacy of Declan Sullivan grows with charity gala

The parents of Notre Dame videographer Declan Sullivan started a fund in their son's name in 2010, and they have since watched that legacy grow.

The Chicago Tribune's Stacy St. Clair reports this week that the fourth annual "No Ordinary Evening" gala will take place Saturday in Navy Pier's grand ballroom in Chicago, with Mike Golic serving as master of ceremonies. Nearly $2 million has been raised in the past three years for students to participate in "Horizons for Youth," a Chicago organization founded by three Notre Dame alumni that provides disadvantaged youth with scholarships and tutoring in order to have a chance at going to college. The Sullivan family selected the organization as a recipient of their son's fund.

From the Tribune:

  • "Now more than four years after his death, Sullivan's friends — many of whom have graduated from college and moved back to Chicago to work — find themselves drawn to the charity as well. About a dozen volunteer as tutors and mentors for the 65 students sponsored by the Declan Drumm Sullivan Memorial Fund.

"Something bad happened to Declan, and it was devastating," said Kent Rieger, 25, who became a mentor at Horizons last year. 'But his family has shown us that we can turn it around and change something negative into a positive."

Notre Dame, its athletic department and head football coach Brian Kelly buy a table at the event each year, per the story, which includes more comments from Declan's friends on the impact Horizons has had.
