J.P. Tokoto declares for NBA draft

North Carolina Tar Heels forward J.P. Tokoto will enter the 2015 NBA draft, multiple sources confirmed. The news was first reported by Yahoo! Sports.

Tokoto won’t yet sign with an agent, which would technically leave the door open for him to withdraw before the NCAA’s April 26 deadline. But his return to Chapel Hill, N.C., is unlikely, according to a source.

This would mark the fourth straight season Carolina has had a player leave early, but Tokoto could arguably come as the biggest surprise to coach Roy Williams. ESPN Insider Chad Ford projects Tokoto as a potential second-round pick.

Tokoto started 34 of 38 games this season and was second to Marcus Paige with an average of 29.1 minutes per game. He was, however, benched for two games after the Heels' loss to the Virginia Cavaliers in which he had only one point and one rebound.

Tokoto averaged 8.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game last season. He was not selected to the all-defensive team this season after making both the coaches and media list his sophomore year.

The 6-foot-6 junior reminded observers of Vince Carter with his seemingly effortless athleticism. He was virtually unstoppable in the open court in transition. But in the halfcourt, Tokoto was limited by a lack of a consistent jumper. He shot 42.8 percent from the field this season, which was a slight decrease from his 48.8 percent average his first two seasons. He didn’t take a lot of 3-pointers, but he did improve this season to make 12 of 32 attempts, after shooting a combined 9-of-47 during his first two seasons.

Tokoto’s departure seemingly clears the way for either Nate Britt or Joel Berry II to enter the starting lineup at point guard next season, moving Paige off the ball. It’s also a natural opening for rising sophomore Justin Jackson at small forward.

The Tar Heels are projected as a potential top-five team next year with nine of their top 10 players returning.
