Eastern Conference wrap: Top teams make early statement

The 2015-16 season is finally underway and it certainly hasn’t disappointed in the early going. The best teams in the East have quickly made their presence felt.

WHO'S LOOKING GOOD

New York Rangers: The Rangers posted a 3-0-0 record in their first three games. It’s the sixth time in franchise history New York has started the regular season with three consecutive wins. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has been outstanding and already providing highlight-reel saves for the Rangers. In those three victories, the veteran netminder made a combined 100 saves on 106 shots. He made at least 30 saves in each of those games. Rookie Oscar Lindberg also made a dramatic debut. He became the first Rangers rookie in franchise history to record a goal in each of the team’s first three games. He scored his first goal on the Rangers’ first shot of the season, while helping New York to a 3-2 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.

Montreal Canadiens: It’s a safe bet that the Rangers, Canadiens and Lightning will be battling for Eastern Conference supremacy all season. Montreal continued its dominance over the Boston Bruins with a 4-2 win on Saturday at TD Garden. Goaltender Carey Price was in midseason form with 55 saves in his first two games. Fellow netminder Mike Condon played his first game for the Canadiens, posting 20 saves en route to a 3-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Sunday. Max Pacioretty scored two goals in the season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs to become the first Montreal captain to score twice in his first game wearing the 'C.'

Tampa Bay Lightning: The Lightning won consecutive games to start the season for the first time since 2010-11. That season, Tampa reached the Eastern Conference finals but eventually lost to the Bruins in seven games. Newcomer Erik Condra scored his first goal for the Lightning during a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Goaltender Ben Bishop is 2-0-0 for the third time in his career. So far this season, he has stopped 47 of the 50 shots he’s faced. Captain Steven Stamkos recorded his 499th point of his career on Oct. 10.

Justin Abdelkader, Detroit Red Wings: Abdelkader scored four goals and added an assist in the first two games for Detroit. He recorded his second career hat trick, including the game-winning goal in a 4-0 win over the Maple Leafs on Oct. 9. He became the third player in franchise history to score three goals in Detroit’s opener.

WHO'S LOOKING BAD

Boston Bruins: The Bruins are off to a terrible start. Without veteran defenseman Zdeno Chara in the lineup due to an upper-body injury, the Bruins struggled defensively and are off to a 0-2-0 start. It’s only the 13th time in their 91-year history the Bruins have opened the season with consecutive losses. Boston lost to the Winnipeg Jets to open the season, followed by a loss to the Canadiens on Saturday. It also didn’t help that forward Brad Marchand suffered a concussion against Montreal and is out indefinitely. There’s been widespread speculation that Bruins coach Claude Julien is on the hot seat if the team stumbles in the early going. Team president Cam Neely recently denied that, but if this is a sign of things to come for the Bruins, the coach could become the fall guy.

INJURY UPDATE

Brad Marchand, Boston Bruins: Marchand suffered a concussion against Montreal and is out indefinitely. Marchand was attempting to make a play when his head made contact with the elbow of Canadiens right winger Dale Weise. Marchand fell to the ice, was slow getting up and struggled his way to the bench before trainers grabbed him and escorted him to the locker room. The good news is Zdeno Chara is set to make his season debut on Monday night after missing the first two games with an upper-body injury.

Robin Lehner, Buffalo Sabres: The goaltender suffered an ankle injury in his debut for the Sabres. He was placed on the injured reserve list with a lower-body injury and is expected to be sidelined 6-10 weeks.

NEW HOME

The New York Islanders played their first regular-season game at their new home, the Barclays Center. The Islanders lost 3-2 in overtime to the Blackhawks. It was fitting that captain John Tavares notched the first goal for the Islanders in their new home.

EICHEL WATCH

A total of nine players made their regular-season debuts for the Buffalo Sabres in Thursday’s opener, including rookie sensation Jack Eichel. After leading the team with six points (two goals and four assists) in four preseason games, the 18-year-old forward scored his first NHL goal on Oct. 8 against the Ottawa Senators. He became the third-youngest player in Sabres history to score in his debut, and the second-youngest player to ever score in a Sabres season-opener.
