Rapid Reaction: Red Wings 3, Lightning 2

TAMPA, Fla. -- Here’s what happened during the Detroit Red Wings’ 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round series Thursday night at Amalie Arena.

Dueling debuts: Opposing goaltenders, Tampa’s Ben Bishop and Detroit’s Petr Mrazek, both made their Stanley Cup playoff debuts. The 23-year-old Mrazek was solid and proved to be the difference-maker in the victory, finishing with 44 saves. The first goal he allowed was on a nifty move by the Lightning’s Brian Boyle on a shorthanded partial breakaway. Even though the Lightning created traffic in front, Mrazek was finding the puck and made plenty of timely saves. Bishop finished with 11 saves and wasn’t tested too often. He had no chance on either one of Pavel Datsyuk's two goals for the Red Wings.

Oh, Pavel: Datsyuk scored a pair of goals to lead Detroit. In 146 career playoffs games, he has 41 goals and 69 assists for 110 points. Datsyuk is sixth in franchise history for all-time playoff scoring. He’s also eighth among active postseason scoring leaders in the league. In Game 1, he gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead 9:03 into the game on Detroit’s first shot. He added a power-play goal only eight seconds into the second period for a 2-1 advantage.

Possession power: Prior to the start of this series, both coaches explained the importance of controlling the play and puck possession. Tampa held the edge in that category but the Red Wings capitalized on their quality chances.

Special teams: Boyle’s shorthanded goal at 14:31 of the first period tied the game at 1-1 and gave Tampa momentum. The Red Wings’ Drew Miller followed with breakaway shorthanded bid later in the period, but Bishop made a glove save to stifle the quality chance. Datsyuk’s second goal of the game was a power-play tally. With the help of teammate Tomas Jurco, who set a major screen, Datsyuk scored from the slot on a laser-like shot, beating Bishop to the top left corner. The Red Wings’ Luke Glendening scored a shorthanded goal at 9:50 of the third period to give Detroit a 3-1 lead.

Up next: Game 2 will be played at 3 p.m. ET Saturday at Amalie Arena.
