The Winnipeg Jets had numerous discussions with the Toronto Maple Leafs about Daniel Winnik, but word is Winnipeg made it clear from the outset that they weren’t prepared to offer any pick higher than a third-rounder in any package. Toronto general manager Dave Nonis (who has done well in his two trades so far) was adamant about receiving a second-rounder. The Leafs were able to get that (plus a fourth-rounder) from the Pittsburgh Penguins, and that was that. Winnipeg moved a third-rounder (and a conditional fifth- or sixth-round pick) to the Carolina Hurricanes for Jiri Tlusty instead. Now, they didn’t just do the Carolina deal because the Winnik asking price was too high for them. The Jets also feel that, in losing a skill guy like Mathieu Perreault to injury, Tlustly’s skill set resembles Perreault's more closely than Winnik's. The Jets may not necessarily be done. A source suggested Thursday they’re still looking for a forward.
