Rumblings: Panthers waiting to decide deadline strategy

It’s often a tough call for bubble teams to decide if they want to add or sell or stand pat at the trade deadline.

The Florida Panthers entered play Tuesday just one point behind the Boston Bruins for the final wild-card spot in the East.

Right now it’s just too early for general manager Dale Tallon to know what he will try to do ahead of the March 2 deadline.

"We’re not going to disrupt our plan," Tallon told ESPN.com Tuesday, referring to the team’s positive-looking rebuild. "If we add from within, great, if we have to add another piece [from elsewhere], then we’ll go that direction. But right now we’re a long way from March 2."

Adding some speed and skill -- some offense -- would be the top priority if the Panthers hang in the playoff race, although the team has started to score more of late.

When Tallon mentioned adding from within, he was referring to the number of young prospects in Florida's system who seem ready for a chance. He wants to be careful not to block some of those players from having their chance.

But Tallon also allowed that, if his team was in the right position in the standings closer to March 2, the Panthers would also look at something that makes sense from elsewhere.

Just too early to make that call now.
