Young Wayne Gretzky had photo taken with Jean Beliveau, too

As memories and anecdotes flowed in over the past week after the death of Jean Beliveau and the incredible farewell given to him in Montreal, Wayne Gretzky was brought back to a specific memory when first meeting the Canadiens legend.

"It was before our first game in the Quebec peewee tournament in 1974," Gretzky told ESPN.com Wednesday. "He came into our dressing room and he said, 'I heard there's this really good player playing and I just wanted to come in and say hello.' We took a photo. It was pretty cool."

Then Gretzky added, with a laugh: "I remember him saying, 'Don't let me down.'"

Gretzky scored seven goals that night.

"I said to my dad, 'I hope I didn't let Mr. Beliveau down,'" Gretzky said, chuckling at the memory.

Gretzky said he's found himself thinking over the past week about that photo he took with Beliveau in that moment.

The one he took as a kid with Gordie Howe is the one that gets more attention, in large part because Howe and Gretzky have always been linked together.

But The Great One also fondly remembers meeting Mr. Beliveau.
