Struggling Avs not planning big changes

The look on Joe Sakic's face when asked the question said more than words.

No, the Colorado Avalanche general manager did not expect to see his team near the basement of the standings this season after winning the Central Division a year ago.

Internally, some regression was perhaps expected, given how young the team is, but last in the Central?

"No," Sakic said after the board of governors meetings wrapped up Tuesday. "But the guys are learning, they’re going through adversity right now. Everything went really well last year. We’ve faced a lot of injuries, some guys haven’t played so well. The core is young and they have to learn to deal and go through this stuff."

Sakic has some of his GM pals calling for sure, throwing some real anchors at him.

But the Avs will remain patient.

"I think the biggest thing for us is that we know we’re still growing as a team," said Sakic, whose Avs lost 3-0 at home to Nashville on Tuesday night. "We’re not going to do anything drastic right now. We're missing a lot of our guys due to injury, so it's tough to get a grasp on the type of team we could be. There’s no panic mode or anything."
