Could the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback competition be a true three-man race between veteran Mark Sanchez, rookie Paxton Lynch and second-year signal-caller Trevor Siemian? Mark Sanchez has the clear edge in experience, having appeared in 75 NFL games for the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles. But Sanchez's injury to his non-throwing thumb opened the door for Lynch and Siemian to receive OTA reps. Lynch, the Broncos' first-round pick and possible quarterback of the future, received rave reviews from teammates after OTAs, noted Paul Klee of the Colorado Springs Gazette. Last season at Memphis, Lynch threw for 3,776 yards, 82 TDs and just four interceptions.

Siemian, however, shouldn't be counted out for the starting job due to the knowledge he gained of the Broncos offense last season. The 2015 seventh-round pick out of Northwestern served as Denver's No. 2 quarterback while Peyton Manning was injured last year and faces less of a learning curve than the other two quarterbacks. Lynch has even admitted that learning the playbook is "a lot to handle." Sanchez, meanwhile, attended OTAs and worked with the starters, but he did not take a snap from center.

Broncos.com's Andrew Mason describes the team's quarterback competition as a "wide open" race. In a video mailbag on the team's website, Mason noted that head coach Gary Kubiak has said there will be an open competition. Mason predicted that Kubiak won't name a starter "until sometime potentially into the preseason."

The Broncos would like all three quarterbacks to receive game reps in the preseason before a decision is made, noted Mason. "When he says it's going to be an open competition, he means it," Mason said of Kubiak. "Don't assume anything."
