49ers Camp Report: Day 8

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of the San Francisco 49ers training camp:

  • Nose tackle Glenn Dorsey apparently injured his left arm and left the field after begin attended to by the training stuff. The team had no word on his injury.

  • After taking it easy Thursday, star tight end Vernon Davis was back on the field Friday night.

  • Coach Jim Harbaugh said rookie center Marcus Martin and rookie linebacker Aaron Lynch should be able to practice with the team. They have been going through individual drills. The fact that Martin missed a week of camp could limit his chances of beating Daniel Kilgore for the starting job to start the season. Martin could always make up ground at some point in the season. The 49ers have big hopes for him.

  • Harbaugh said reserve running back Jewel Hampton nailed a 50-yard field goal prior to practice on Thursday. Harbaugh said it was quite the thing to witness. If Hampton makes the team and the 49ers need an emergency kicker in case of a Phil Dawson injury, we know who the team may turn to.

  • Reserve tight end Garrett Celek is still out with a disc problem in his back. He has not practiced in training camp. He could be hard pressed to beat out Derek Carrier for No. 3 tight end job. Carrier has had a good camp.

  • Harbaugh said the team practiced late Friday (8 p.m. ET start) because they will be playing some late games this season. He wants them to prepared for the late starts.

  • Receiver Chuck Jacobs, who was on the practice squad last season, had a nice night. He has been performing well in camp, but with a deep receiver group, Jacobs may once again be bound for the practice squad.

  • Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula continues to work hard with Lawrence Okoye. The former British Olympian is a football novice and it shows. He is athletic, but he has a long ways to go.

  • Part of the appeal of the new Levi's Stadium is all the art work of key moments and figures in the team's history. Harbaugh said the team is putting up a photo of the franchise's first ever win in the player's lounge.

  • The deal running back Alfonso Smith signed this week is a one-year contract worth $645,000. Smith is still a longshot to make the 53-man roster.

  • The Pro Football Hall of Fame changed its guidelines for contributors Friday. There will now be a separate category for contributors such as owners. That could help former 49ers' owner Eddie DeBartolo gain a quicker call from Canton. He has been a finalist for election in recent years.

  • The 49ers players have Saturday off. The next practice is Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET.
