Raiders Camp Report: Day 7

NAPA, Calif . -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Oakland Raiders training camp:

  • It's probably a good thing Matt Schaub will never have to play against Charles Woodson in a regular season game this season. Woodson picked off Schaub again on Friday, his third interception of Schaub in two practices. Granted, this one came on a tipped pass across the middle off tight end David Ausberry. Still, a pick is a pick is a pick, right? Coach Dennis Allen on Thursday defended Schaub after his consecutive picks, saying he was not going to push the panic button. And the way quarterback coach John DeFilippo sees it, he's glad Schaub had a tough go of it. Kinda. "No one wants to see someone struggle, but he came back with two strikes," DeFilippo said Friday. "It was great to see him make two mistakes, and then come back and make two great plays."

  • Rookie Derek Carr also shined, on long throws down the middle. First, he hit undrafted rookie Mike Davis, who beat seventh-round draft pick TJ Carrie. Then Carr found Andre Holmes with a beautifully placed ball that fell right over Holmes' shoulder for the touchdown, beating Chimdi Chekwa, who was shaken up a bit on the play but continued to practice.

  • Carr, though, seems to be dealing with an issue of holding onto the ball too long and patting it, ala Dan Pastorini (there's a name for you) at times. On several drills, he simply eats the ball, rather than throwing it away. Perhaps it's a byproduct of Carr coming out of a system at Fresno State where he worked almost exclusively out of the shotgun the last three years of his college career. NFL pass-rushers will no doubt collapse a pocket faster than college defenses.

  • Miles Burris maintained his hold on the starting weakside linebacker spot, over Sio Moore. Granted, Friday was a non-padded practice so there was not much to report on how he looked in team drills, other than covering the flat in passing downs.

  • Defensive end Justin Tuck was given a day off, "somewhat of a veteran's day off, somewhat of an injury," Allen said. Tuck did tweak a groin, though.

  • There were no changes among the Raiders' walking wounded as receivers Greg Little (hamstring) and Juron Criner (hamstring), linebackers Kaluka Maiava (hamstring) and Marshall McFadden (hip), defensive lineman Antonio Smith (groin) and safety Shelton Johnson (unknown) did not practice. Cornerback DJ Hayden (foot), safety Usama Young (quad) and guard Lucas Nix (knee) remained on the physically unable to perform list while defensive tackle Stacy McGee is still on the non-football injury list.

  • The Raiders practice again Saturday at 3 p.m. local time.
