Marcus Trufant retires as a Seahawk

Marcus Trufant always will be a Seahawk now. The longtime Seattle cornerback and Tacoma native officially retired as a Seahawk Thursday.

Trufant signed a one-day contract with the Seahawks so he could retire as part of the team where he spent his entire NFL career.

“I’m not sad,” Trufant said. “It’s just a chapter that’s closing. This is a happy time. I’m excited to see what comes next.”

Trufant held a news conference Thursday in front of a full house at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center auditorium. Among those in attendance were current Seahawks players Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor, along with former Seahawks Walter Jones and Roy Lewis.

Also in attendance was Sacramento Kings guard and former University of Washington basketball star Isaiah Thomas, also a Tacoma native. Trufant’s brothers Isaiah and Desmond (both of whom are current NFL players), were there, as well.

In his 10 seasons with Seattle, Trufant posted 638 tackles (557 solo) to rank 10th all-time in Seahawks history. His 21 interceptions rank fifth all-time in team history.

He returned two interceptions for touchdowns and also recorded 113 passes defensed, two sacks, five forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.

Trufant signed with Jacksonville last year, but was released at the end or preseason and did not play in 2013.

Trufant thanked Seahawks coach Pete Carroll for allowing him, “to come back and retire the right way as a Seahawk.”
