Arians: LeSean McCoy not 'good fit for us'

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Even though Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians had “inklings” that LeSean McCoy was on the trading block, he wasn’t interested in acquiring the shifty running back from the Philadelphia Eagles.

“It wasn’t a good fit for us,” Arians told NFL Network on Wednesday morning.

Philadelphia traded McCoy to Buffalo on Tuesday for linebacker Kiko Alonso, who missed last season with an ACL injury. The Cardinals didn’t think about trading for McCoy, who’s 5-foot-11 and 208 pounds, Arians said. They currently have five running backs on the roster who are between 5-8 and 5-11.

While the move came as a surprise to the public, Arians could sense a move was about to be made.

“I had some inklings that there might be something happening,” Arians said.

But Arians liked the move for the Bills.

“Great move for Buffalo,” Arians said. “Not that Alonso’s not a great player. I think he’s going to be, you know coming off surgery. But when you have LeSean’s résumé, that kind of speaks for itself.”

When Arians first heard that McCoy was traded he was relieved.

The Cardinals won’t have to face McCoy next season when they travel to Philadelphia. In four career games against the Cards, McCoy averaged 95.75 yards per game. Against Arians-coached Cardinals’ teams, McCoy ran for 212 yards combined in 2013 and 2014.

“He’s tough to get down on the ground,” Arians said. “He’s so explosive. Every time he touches it you hold your breath. I’m glad we’re not going to face him this year.”
