SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Last season, A.J. Jenkins failed to give the San Francisco 49ers' offense a spark. Nine games into this season, the player the 49ers traded Jenkins for isn't doing much better.

Despite getting chances to help at a position that badly needed it, Jon Baldwin has given the 49ers' offense little. With Mario Manningham back on the field and Michael Crabtree on pace to return soon, it doesn't seem like Baldwin's chances will increase.

Baldwin has three catches for 28 yards this season. He was acquired in August for Jenkins, the 49ers’ first-round pick last year. The 49ers were hoping to salvage something with the trade.

Baldwin’s lack of contribution is not a stunner, but he had made at least a modest contribution in Kansas City. The 26th pick of the 2011 draft had a total of 41 catches for 579 yards in two seasons with the Chiefs. Baldwin has ideal size (6-foot-4, 230 pounds), and he showed a penchant for the spectacular catch in college at Pitt. But it hasn’t translated at the NFL level.

Again, Baldwin could still develop, but the 49ers have given him a chance, and he hasn't taken advantage of it. It may come as a consolation to the 49ers that Jenkins has done nothing for the 9-0 Chiefs. He has one catch. He had no catches as a rookie with the 49ers.
